For the first time in 2018 during the 6th edition of the «Pierre Angénieux ExcelLens in Cinematography» ceremony at the Cannes Film Festival, in parallel of the tribute to cinematographer Ed Lachman’s filmography, Angénieux wished to recognize the work of a young Director of Photography.
The question remains among the DP community and it keeps the conversations going. After his visit to the Angénieux factory in 2017, Kees Van Oostrum (ASC), President of the American Society of Cinematographer gave a long interview to Jon Fauer (ASC), for the magazine Film & Digital Times, titled “Kees Van Oostrum, ASC on Zooms”.
Zooms and/or primes, what was his choice ?
One of the keys to success of Angénieux’s latest lens introductions is the unique IRO - Interchangeable Rear Optics - technology, a revolutionary modular lens design that enables different lens configurations. First introduced on the Optimo 44-440 A2S, this unique and very customer oriented system met a great success among the cinema community for its flexibility and cost-efficiency. It is also proposed on the Type EZ Series and now on the New Optimo Ultra 12X lens.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, the formats have been subject to regular changes generating complete revolutions for cameras and lenses. The latest ones come with the Full Frame cameras recently presented: Sony Venice, RED Monstro and others to come. This new market trend is pushing lens manufacturers to adapt their lens offer.

The pros… the cons… everything you may want to know about the Angenieux Type EZ Ienses is in José Alkon’s (http://www.josealkon.com/) testimonial. José, a young Peruvian born and Sydney based cinematographer, is the happy owner of a Type-EZ 1 lens and shares with us his purchasing decision process and first EZ experience.
Where does the word Zoom come from?
The word zoom has its origins in aviation, meaning “quickly move closer”. It started to be used in photography in the 1930’s with the development of new optics with variable focal lengths. It quickly became a common name in the second part of the 20th century as Pierre Angenieux called “zooms” his lenses with variable focal length and as the zoom lenses became more popular due to major improvements in lens design.
“Drift” is the result of a fruitful collaboration between Kelly’s Heroes and Angénieux.
“Drift” is a short film Kelly’s Heroes shot as a demo project to try out some of those new possibilities in aerial filming. Drone shots have been around for a while now, but the technology is growing and so are the drones. Bigger drones mean bigger payloads which result in a wider variety of different possible set-up’s. Kelly’s Heroes wanted to fly a set-up that allows us to do something new, something different. They came up with the idea to fly anamorphic zoom lenses and try some aerial retro zooms (travelling in, zoom out).”Drift” premiered at the AFC MicroSalon in Paris in February 2017.
